Re-Homing Old Boats: A Sustainable Alternative to BoatBreaking

Finding a Foster Family for Your Boat

When encountering an old, green, and dirty boat, the immediate impulse might be to break the boat up and scrap her. Fortunately for both our wallets and the planet, in many cases the dirt is largely superficial.

What is Re-Homing?
Re-Homing is a service designed to find a new enthusiast who will take on an old boat for free and restore it. This is not just another marketplace listing; we proactively search for a suitable new owner. Our process involves sifting through potential candidates to ensure they are responsible and ready to act, saving you from the hassle of dealing with viewings, negotiations, delays, and more delays.

Which Boats Are Suitable for Re-Homing?
Boats suitable for Re-Homing include:

  • Boats from stalled DIY projects due to changing circumstances
  • Boats inherited by those who are not boating enthusiasts themselves
  • Boats that can no longer be maintained due to health or work constraints

Often, selling these boats can be less than ideal — you might only net a small sum after months of dealing with time-wasters on social media and over the phone.

Our Solution
We offer a seamless Re-Homing process. Through our extensive marketing network, which includes a large following of enthusiastic boaters, we find a new owner who is eager to take on a new project. This approach allows you to dispose of an unfinished project or an old boat at minimal cost. The new owner takes the boat for free but covers all related expenses, such as lifting and transport.

Re-Homing Listing Fees:

  • £250.00 for boats
  • £75.00 for dinghies and tenders

What is the process of Re-Homing?
The process is as follows:

  • The current owner of the boat provides a set of photographs and a description;
  • The boat is listed, and applications are collected (through one, or occasionally two, forms);
  • One applicant is selected and asked to pay a holding deposit;
  • The prospective new owner and the current owner are put in touch to exchange paperwork and transfer the boat;
  • The deposit is refunded, and a #happyNewOwner picture is published 🙂

If not Re-Homing?
If the boat is in good condition, we can help you selling her on an auciton through our partnership with BoatShed.com

Some boats are beyond restoration. In this case, unfortunately, they must be disposed of. We also offer boat breaking services where Re-Homing is not a viable option.
