Freedom 40 AC Cat Ketch
Ashore near Totnes, Devon
About her
This is quite a unique opportunity of a boat which was clearly meant to be a well-thought-out project, with carbon masts, new electronics and other improvements.
'Sandy Bottoms' is a Freedom 40 aft cockpit cat ketch, being re-homed on behalf of her late owner's estate. She is a project boat: her late owner had begun a refit, and it was not finished.
The Freedom 40 was conceived by Garry Hoyt in the mid-1970s, with a hull drawn by Halsey Herreshoff. Its defining feature is the cat ketch rig: two unstayed masts with no shrouds or stays, and no headsail to handle. All sail handling can be done from the cockpit, which made the type popular with couples and short-handed crews. The first boats had a centre cockpit. The aft cockpit version, which 'Sandy Bottoms' is, came later. Most Freedom 40s were built by Tillotson Pearson in Rhode Island, and a few were built in the UK.
All details below are as reported by her owners, or guessed from the pictures. Please check the full album: https://photos.app.goo.gl/jV95yf2Pj4HUxNMe6
