1972 Sabre 27 'Claire Lee'

Free to a New Hone

Afloat in Southampton

The Claire Lee is a 1972 Twin Keel Sabre 27, she is now in need of love, attention and complete renovation. She is currently located in Southampton on a tidal berth on the river Itchen.

The Claire Lee was the late father of the current owner’s yacht; he owned her from new and knew personally Eric White, the owner of Marcon.

Importantly for prospective owners, there is an active and very enthusiastic Sabre 27 Owners Association, that helps its members to make the most of this proven and capable yacht. The Claire Lee was easy to handle; this would be especially relevant to  novice sailors or young families.

After much soul searching, unfortunately no one in the family wishes to take on the Claire Lee as sadly she has become a ‘project boat’, the owner was unwell for a number of years before he died, and this lack of maintenance has taken a toll on the Claire Lee as the photos testify. She is now in need of a full refit/refurbishment. She is most definitely a ‘project boat’ and definitely not a jump on and sail away yacht.

Examples of the work required include:
The Volvo Penta engine (MD1B) was last run in the Summer of 2020. The engine currently turns by hand, and this can visibly be seen on the flywheel and the prop. Also, she requires a replacement gear-change cable from engine to cockpit and the exhaust manifold to be reattached to the engine/exhaust system. The Claire Lee must be moved from her current mooring; therefore, in the first instance this would necessitate the new owner towing her to her new mooring. The river Itchen and the river Test in Southampton boast many moorings and hardstanding’s.

As the photos show, she could do with a refit inside, for example the headlining in the forepeak needs attention, as does the three-door cupboard running the length of the galley.
Externally, for example, the winches, cleats and the deck also need attention.

The tidal berth/mooring would allow for viewing below the waterline (when the tide is out !!).

Items included:
Original sails (Main, Jib and Genoa) – these haven’t been checked and so will need inspecting before use.
Fenders.
Original compass.
