'Pinguino' Sparkman & Stephens SHE 32C
Ashore near the Humber, North Lincolnshire
About the boat
‘Pinguino’ is a well-loved project boat, offered for free to a new owner willing to take on the restoration. The boat will need some significant work before she can return to the water.
Sparkman & Stephens yachts are respected for their build quality and offshore cruising pedigree. This model is a direct evolution of the competitive SHE 31, offering a more cruiser-friendly variant reportedly appreciated by owners for its stiffness, seagoing ability and excellent windward performance, even in heavy swell.
Pinguino’s previous owner had been undertaking a full refit since buying her in 2000, and a new wooden interior and bunks are reported to have been fitted. Unfortunately, the full extent of the work completed and the work still required is not documented, and no formal maintenance records have been located. However, ‘Pinguino’ is said to have been kept clean and well maintained until the last couple of years, and could make a very appealing and worthwhile project for someone willing to take on the work.
Engine
The boat is equipped with a Yanmar YSE12 believed to be in working condition. The engine was reconditioned in the 1990s, but originally dates from the 1970s. According to the family, the engine had very little use apart from regular start-ups until early 2025. An engine manual/booklet is available onboard, along with other instruction manuals and her registration certificate.
Rig
The status of the rig is unknown, although the boat is supplied with an aluminium mast and boom. There are sails and lines onboard, also of unknown condition. It is suspected that the rigging will need to be replaced.
Other equipment
- Full rudder (stored inside the boat)
- Various electronic instruments
- Compass, stove and lifejackets
- Other onboard equipment and fittings, some of which are visible in the photographs supplied.
Location and collection
Pinguino is currently ashore in a cradle, with storage fees paid through to November. The boat can likely be taken over in situ, or removed at the new owner’s expense. There is no formal payment arrangement currently in place, but previously, storage was paid biannually. There is a crane on-site.
Please note that this boat cannot be sailed away from its current location, as the lock gates providing access to the Humber have been out of action for some time.
Before you apply
This boat disposal is being managed by the previous owner’s estate, and Pinguino is to be rehomed as seen: all of the available information is contained in this listing. The family hopes that she will find a new lease of life rather than be scrapped.
