Freedom 35 'Sarann'
Afloat near Ipswich, Suffolk
About her
It seems to be a season of Freedoms: now we have a Freedom 35. This Freedom 35 is a bit of a special build. Already a famously sturdy boat, this one has been described as a bit of a 'one off'.
Her owner reports a balsa-sandwich GRP hull, believed to have been built on the Isle of Man and finished in Falmouth. This Freedom 35 in particular has aluminium beaching legs, allowing for her to stay upright when berthing/anchoring in drying land. The Freedom 35 also has two freestanding masts (similar to our Freedom 40 we had listed earlier this month). Main and mizzen sails reported to be Crusader, new about 6 years ago (Slab reefing).
Fitout
- Wind vane self steering by Scanmar (fitted by her owner in about 2000), with two vanes: standard and light-airs
- Tiller pilot, working through the Scanmar gear in light winds
- CQR anchor on chain. Manual windlass
- Inflatable dinghy, make unknown, but in good condition
- Parachute drogue, 30 ft diameter, used as a sea anchor in heavy weather
- Wind, depth, speed and engine instruments in the cockpit; GPS and Navtex
- VHF radio
- EPIRB
History and condition
She has two water tanks and one diesel tank. Although she originally came with electrical gauges, she has since been refitted with traditional sight tubes. The boat was bought by her current owner in 1997. He has cruised her to Norway, Iceland and the Azores among other places, and reports that she is not in mint cosmetic condition but is sound and ready to go anywhere: he is letting her go only because of his age, not because she isn't seaworthy. No survey has been done since he bought her; necessary work has been carried out by boatyards as needed. Tank capacities are not known.
Engine and domestic
Her engine was replaced in March 2019 with a new Beta Marine 30hp. Last engine service April 2026. It is reported as low hours due to the Covid restrictions and reduced usage since then. Anode replaced when necessary during lift out for annual antifouling. There is a gas cooker/oven, we are told the gas cylinder is in the transom box. We are also told she has a microwave oven for when connected to shore power, a fridge that runs on shore power or with the engine running, and a galley sink with pressurised hot and cold water.
It is reported the water is heated by immersion heater on shore power, but by calorifier when engine is running. There is a heads with a shower. The heads are reported to have been replaced by the marina this summer, when the seacocks were also serviced and a new bilge pump fitted.
